Volunteers Help Restore Bahia Beach

Seventy people recently came out to Bahia Beach in Ruskin to help plant saltmarsh cord grass plugs. The event was organized by Tampa Bay Watch and Southwest Florida Water Management District. Volunteers planted approximately 20,000 saltmarsh plugs. The volunteer event was part of the District’s Bahia Beach Habitat Restoration Project lead by the Surface Water Improvement and Management team.

Clearwater Breaks Ground on Second Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant

The City of Clearwater is a step closer to producing almost all of its own water supply with the ground breaking of another reverse osmosis facility. District Governing Board member Todd Pressman joined city leaders this week at the ground breaking ceremony for the city’s second reverse osmosis water treatment plant. The new facility will treat up to 6.25 million gallons per day of brackish water using state-of-the-art technology to produce additional drinking water for Clearwater customers.

District Studies Greening Issue

As citrus greening becomes an increasing problem across Florida, the District is working with growers that are exceeding their permitted water quantities due to the disease plaguing their groves. Citrus greening, formal name Huanglongbing, is a bacterial disease that causes trees to produce sour, deformed fruit. Citrus greening has spread to all of the state's 32 citrus-growing counties. University of Florida economists estimate the disease has caused $4.5 billion in economic damage and 8,200 lost jobs the state.

Models Assist Staff With Aquifer Assessment

The District uses an extensive combination of research and analysis when assessing aquifer water level changes and the impacts to the state's springs, rivers and wetlands. A computer model is one of those tools used in that research and analysis.
